Bye Bye Sandra Day Hello Fascist Repression of Womyn's Rights

Oh Shit! Oh Shit! Oh Shit! Did I mention oh shit?

Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor just resigned this morning. She will undoubtedly be replaced by as conservative a weasel as Bush can scrounge up, thus ensuring the court's swing to the right and putting Roe V. Wade in great danger of being overturned.

If you care at all about supporting womyn's reproductive rights, I strongly implore you to call your senator's office and say, "My name is __________ andI've just heard that there's a Supreme Court retirement. It's very important that the senator makes sure that any new Justice strongly supports Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to privacy and choice." You can also send an e-mail through NARAL.

This blog is one of many devoted to choice issues, and here's Planned Parenthood's Action Network and Activist Tool Kit.

If a woman's right to choose is an important issue for you, it is imperative that you begin working now, in whatever capacity you feel you can, to safeguard this important right and to keep our womyn out of the dangerous and exploitive back alleys, holding no dominion or control over our own bodies.

WE CANNOT GO BACK!

Agreed BUT Sandra Day O'Connor (or the swing vote as she is known) will undoubtedly be replaced by someone who not only opposes women's rights, but someone who opposes gay rights as well. Though I know that's not your primary issue, as one of your gay boys, I thought I should mention it. I can't wait to see what kind of unsavory, backwater, bible-thumping fuck Bush (or Rove actually) dig up.

i am not so naive as to think that womyn's rights are the only ones at risk, by any means. but i also think that the issue of choice will be one of the first things attacked by the new court.

i chose to write about this issue specifically, because it is clearly a specific hot topic whenever a new appointment comes up, and because it is a concrete prior court ruling that is in great risk of being overturned. i am well aware of justice o'connor's history of commitment to uphold the constitution rather than participate in partisan politics, and all too aware of what we are losing. however when contacting your senators and taking action, saying "please don't approve any nominee who is going to propel the neo-con agenda forward faster than the concorde" doesn't quite work. i focused on this issue because of the ability to take direct action using this key issue as a concrete framework around which to structure the battle for as non-partisan and less dangerous (ie less right wing neo-con marionette) a justice as possible.

and mr. artsy hotpants, you do know that i am very concerned with gay rights (or the lack thereof , especially after this last election year and all of the dangerous legislation passed) and active in the gay rights movement.

I have to say that I just can't get worked up about this. I have no doubts that Bush will try to push through a very conservative judge, but, unfortunately, it seems to what the country wants. Or at least...it's what they think they want. I feel like saying...fine...fuck you all. THIS was what you wanted. Until the democrats will step up and grow some balls, I just have no respect for either party. I opt out.

skoehler, i don't know you but i appreciate your views and your eloquence and you make a lot of sense. but if we are not to stand up and fight for the single issue we believe most strongly about- gay rights, a woman's right to choose, seperation of church and state, stem cell research, affirmative action, etc...what are we to stand up and fight for? You answer succintly what we are losing in Sandra Day O'Connor- a justice who (usually) keeps the court in balance and helps it to do what it should. I have every confidence that Bush will try and push through some uber-conservative wacko. If not now, then when Rehnquist retires or Stevens or, perhaps, Ginsburg. The other side will only be able to protest but so much. Bush is already focusing on potential justices in their fifties. We will feel the ramifications of his appointments for at least 25 years. Ok, Synge sorry to hijack your blog. I will not post on this topic anymore.

Mr. Artsy Hotpants and Skoehler and anyone else - please feel free to hijak my blog for discussing your views. Since when do I not enjoy a good discussion?

Skoehler, i disagree with you - if the right is using single issues to galvanize their base, then in being overly broad and all encompassing, we lose out on people. This has traditional been part of the downfall of the left - the fact that we do want to be all encompassing and all inclusive, which makes us appear soft on the issues.

vix, you are perfectly entitled to wash your hands of the whole thing out of disgust, but then you are not entitled to cry foul when one by one all of our civil liberties and rights are infringed upon. I have little respect for either political party, but nevertheless it is ultimately my responsibility as a citizen to make my voice heard as much as possible. Unfortunately we're trying to do damage control here, and it crosses party lines. We the people do have power as a collective of individual citizens to hold government accountable - political parties aside - for their actions or potential actions. We have not been doing that. Perhaps you think this is what the people seem to want because there are many like you who say fuck you, you get what you deserve and retreat into their shells. what kind of a court do we want making decisions when our children are grown? it affects more than just us, more than just this moment.

I knew you were going to say that.

I guess the last election made me a pessimist. I really couldn't believe that the monkey would be re-elected.
