Take Your Solipsistic Whining and Shove It!

I'm hearing on NPR a whole news report devoted to a bunch of Chicagoans who are evidently up in arms about the upcoming name change of the Marshall Fields department store chain. This is, in my opinion, the height of ridiculousness. Considering everything going on in the world today, it speaks a lot for our solipsistic consumerist priorities; instead of being up in arms about the huge loss of life occurring in Iraq or having occurred in New Orleans, these people are instead choosing to focus their energies on the loss of a department store name? Can we really be this shallow of a society? This is making me nauseated.

Come on people, its a fucking store! Are you that brainwashed by the almighty consumerist frenzy?

Actually, the title of this post should be "Take Your Solipistic Whining and Shove It Smooshily!"

speaking as a chicagoan, i fully admit that i am upset to hear that they're changing the name of marshall fields, only because marshall field's is a tradition and a chicago institution, part of the city's heritage. the flagship store on state street was designed by daniel burnam, one of chicago's- and america's- most lauded and talented architects. marshall field himself was essential to the development of this city, a self-made millionaire who provided the funding that gave birth to the art institute of chicago, the field museum and the university of chicago. though i've only been here for six years, i have become very loyal to my tough little bulldog of a city, and i hate the thought of one of our major home grown business successes being renamed after a new york city chain.

am i more upset about this than about the horrific situation of the refugees of hurricane katrina? or the aids epidemic in africa? or the threat of an uber-conservative supreme court taking control of my body? no, of course not.

but i am sad to see i go. and i do not think there is anything wrong with that. chicago is already considered the "second city" to new york- at least let us keep our history, let us be proud of our accomplishments.

I think I have to side with Little Orphan Annie on that one. I also read the article on that online someplace; and while there are a lot more "important" and pertinent issues taking place at the moment, we shouldn't just sweep aside sentiment for such an icon as Marshall Fields either.

A lot of people identify with that place as a positive memory growing up and to see it go by the wayside is sad. So let them have their moment to reminice (sp?) and vent. Then all will be back to normal and we can go back to focusing on the shit that we find ourselves caught up in today.
